Just back from Bukit Lawang - an interesting little town at the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park. We had the most wonderful stay at the Green Hill Guesthouse and an unbelievable 4 day jungle trek during which time we realized how much our bodies are capable of (kicked our butts but we did it!) and saw such diversity of flora and fauna: orangutans (both wild and semi-wild), Thomas Leaf Monkeys, Gibbons, Macaques, huge monitor lizards, a turtle, black eagles, hornbills, millipedes, a thousand (or so it seemed) varieties of ants including the HUGE lemon ant, butterflies of all colors and sizes (love the "paper" butterfly!), fish, a snake, two varieties of chameleon...and we saw signs of sun bears (scratching on trees), porcupine (long, beautiful quills and digging), clearings from the Great Argus pheasant...the plant life was amazing and I wish I had the drawing ability and time to do an illustrated guide to each and every leaf...
We are now in recovery mode - happily chilin' at My Dream Hotel...I'll post more later and pictures once I have access to a full computer system.
Sumatran Pendidikan - an Indonish blended phrase - loosely translates as Sumatran Education, the heart of my 2011 summer. This blog tracks my Sumatran Pendidikan: learning about educational systems and programs and sharing ideas through a teaching exchange...while also exploring and discovering new things about myself and the world through untethered travel, treks and urban walk-abouts. My gratitude to the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program and staff and my generous host teacher Siti Zulfah Sulaiman and her colleagues in Medan for making this Sumatran Pendidikan possible.
